The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued "Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information", which apply to all entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The standards apply to health information created or maintained by health care providers who engage in certain electronic transactions, health plans, and health care clearinghouses. Under the security standards announced recently, Covered Entities must establish procedures and mechanisms to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of electronic protected health information. The rule requires covered entities to implement administrative, physical and technical safeguards to protect electronic protected health information in their care.
